Framing slick

A chisel the size of your forearm, driven by hand into green oak.

Large Wood Chisel Mallet
A framing slick, socketed and long.

A slick is a chisel the size of your forearm, socketed onto a long handle and pushed by hand — no mallet. It pares big timbers with the kind of control you only get from your shoulder.

The set

blade 2" — 3" wide, 12"+ long
socket a tapered socket, no ferrule to split
handle long, for two-handed pushing
grip the handle rests against the chest

When it shines

Fitting a tenon into its mortise, fairing a brace, or taking the saw marks off a beam face — the slick does the finishing cuts.
