Why we still cut joints by hand

A CNC router can cut a perfect mortise in forty seconds. So why is every frame on gable drawn for the hand?

The line you cut to

Machines cut to a coordinate. Hands cut to a line. The difference sounds small and is everything — a machine doesn't know when the wood is fighting back, and a chisel in your hand does.

Tight is a feeling

A tenon that fits is a thing you feel, not a thing you measure. It drops in with a soft thud and holds a vacuum on the way out. You can't CNC that. You can only learn it.

The honest part

Hand-cut joints aren't about nostalgia. They're about the joint knowing it was made to be seen. When the frame is the room, every knife line you left is the wallpaper.
